KCATA approves two transformative affordable housing developments

RideKC Development Corporation has announced that two new affordable housing projects in Kansas City have received approval from the KCATA Board of Commissioners.

The developments, Twin Elms and Promise Place, are part of RideKC's Transportation-oriented Community (TOC) initiative, which aims to increase access to housing, jobs, healthcare and education in the region. Both projects will be developed with easy access to public transportation and other amenities and will meet strict TOC benchmarks for economic and environmental benefits. The developments are in stage 2 of a multi-step approval process.

"We’re excited about these two facility projects and how they will impact their neighborhoods," said Michael Riley, Director of Development for RKCDC. "On a larger scale, we’re excited about how Transportation-oriented Community (TOC) development can have a transformational impact across our region, increasing access to housing, jobs, healthcare and education."

KCATA is leading the way as one of the most innovative transportation agencies in the nation, according to Melissa Bynum, Board Chair of the KCATA. The two approved TOC facilities are made possible through KCATA's START policy, which stands for Sustaining Transportation and Reinvesting Together.

Twin Elms will be located at 41st Street and Paseo Boulevard and will be a 54-unit senior affordable multifamily housing facility. Promise Place will be located at E. 45th Street and Olive Street and will be a 101-unit multifamily housing facility. The developments will be accessible to transportation and other amenities, with the goal of providing a better quality of life.

For RideKC Development Corporation to recommend a facilities project to the KCATA Board, it must meet strict TOC development benchmarks to deliver economic and environmental benefits to the region. Any developer partnering with RKCDC must also make commitments to facilitating public transportation such as rider and driver amenities, public/private parking options and improved transit shelter accommodations.
