DBIA-MAR gala celebrates design-build Excellence Awards

The McArthur Bridge-West Approach Modifications was named the 2023 Project of the Year at a recent awards luncheon celebration hosted by DBIA Mid-America Region (DBIA-MAR).  The project also received an Excellence Award (civil infrastructure and innovation category).

The McArthur Bridge, a truss bridge with two railroad tracks spanning the Mississippi River, connects St. Louis, MO to East St. Louis, IL.  It is the fourth busiest rail crossing over the Mississippi River and the second-longest railroad bridge in the United States.  The original bridge was constructed in 1912 and opened in 1917.  The modification work was completed while maintaining no less than one track in service at all times, saving $5 million over the course of the project. 

Goodwin Brothers Construction Company was the design-builder on the project, which was designed by Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, IncTerminal Railroad Association of St. Louis owns the project.

Eric Danielson, associate, senior director and director of business development at CRB, announced the awards.

Other Excellence Award winners were:

Kansas City International Airport Terminal Parking Garage in Kansas City, MO (commercial category).  The design-builder was JE Dunn Construction, and the designer was BNIM.  Kansas City Aviation Department, City of Kansas City owns the project.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic in Corpus Christi, TX (healthcare category).  The project is owned by US Federal Properties Co. and was designed by Hoefer Welker.  The design-builder was Jacobsen Construction.

Central Bank Sporting Complex in Kansas City, MO (commercial category-design excellence), owned by City of Kansas City, MD Management and Sporting Kansas City and designed by WSKF Architects, Olsson Studio and Olsson.  The design-builder was Superior Bowen.

KBP at Three Hallbrook Place in Leawood, KS (commercial category-design excellence), design-built by Titan Built, designed by Hoefer Welker and owned by KBP Brands.

Merit Award winners included:

Columbia Regional Airport Terminal in Columbia, MO (commercial category), design-built by Nabholz, designed by RS&H, Inc. and owned by City of Columbia.

Grandview I-49 Outer Road Conversion in Grandview, MO (civil infrastructure category), design-built by Radmacher Brothers Excavating Company, Inc., designed by TREKK Design Group, LLC and owned by City of Grandview.

FY19 DBIO Eglin AFB, FL, Pharmacy Renovation at Eglin Air Force Base, FL (healthcare category), design-built by JE Dunn Construction, designed by Hoefer Welker and owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District.

Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kansas, design-built by Centric, designed by AMAI Architecture and owned by Milburn Country Club, won the Small Project Award.

The awards ceremony concluded with Matt Meier, associate principal, Pulse Design Group, DBIA-MAR regional vice president and president-elect, awarding a golden gavel to Doug Beichley, senior design manager, JE Dunn Construction, DBIA-MAR regional president and board chairman.

DBIA-MAR recognizes design-build as a project delivery system whereby a single entity provides comprehensive design and construction services to an owner under a single contract.  DBIA-MAR has six chapters and four student chapters in the states of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.
