Westport's Atomic Cowboy, Denver Biscuit Company and Fat Sully’s open for business

After more than a year of anticipation, restaurant owner Drew Shader opened the doors of Atomic Cowboy, Denver Biscuit Company and Fat Sully’s this week, with Frozen Gold slated to open close behind.

Located in the old City Ice Building on the corner of 42nd and Pennsylvania Ave., the 8,600-SF space went through a complete transformation to house the four concepts under one roof while still keeping the history of the more than 100-year-old building alive.

The new layout, designed by Gould Evans and Bray Architecture, also includes a covered patio that has the capability to be enclosed during the winter months. The interior features ten large TVs (four on the patio), a custom mural and custom neon art.

The various artwork throughout the building ties in with the Colorado locations with hints of western - like the larger-than-life neon art of a cowgirl - while giving nods to Kansas City with a custom KC Ice House mural and custom neon arrowhead.

Atomic Cowboy, Denver Biscuit Company and Fat Sully’s occupy the original space while Frozen Gold (ice cream) occupies a new glass addition on the northwest corner of the building.

“We were thrilled to be involved in bringing these exciting restaurant concepts to Kansas City - especially in the historic and unique Westport district and Ice House building. These four concepts give visitors even more choices for dining and entertainment in a truly ‘Westport’ way - fun and festive,” said Leah DiCarlo, development director with Centric, the project’s general contractor.

Shader’s Atomic Provisions works with a variety of local brands daily, including Q39, Good Natured Family Farms, Boulevard Brewery, The Roasterie, J. Rieger, Restless Spirits, Cinder Block Brewery, 360 Vodka Distillery and more. This is the company’s first Kansas City location and its second location to include all four concepts under one roof.

Here’s a run-down of the restaurant menus, along with their hours of operation:

Atomic Cowboy – Inventive cocktails, craft beer and wine served Sunday- Thursday 7 a.m.- 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 7 a.m.- 12 a.m. (later hours planned as Coronavirus allows).

Denver Biscuit Company – Award-winning, southern-style gourmet biscuit sandwiches and biscuit entrées made with traditional handmade, southern-folded biscuits prepared every 20 minutes as seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, CNN and Food Network. Guests can view biscuits in progress from the glass windows on the north side of the building. Denver Biscuit Company is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and until 3 p.m. on weekends.

Fat Sully’s – Hand-tossed New-York-style pizza created with freshly prepared dough, single-source mozzarella cheese, tomatoes from New Jersey and fresh toppings in a build-your-own slice or pie model. Due to Corona considerations, Fat Sully’s is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and open until midnight Thursday through Saturday, including a walk-up window on the north side of the building with later hours planned as COVID-19 considerations allow. Next to the walk-up window, guests are able to watch pizza slingers toss pizzas through a wall of windows.

Frozen Gold – Gourmet soft-serve ice cream with flavorful, unique specialty toppings. Frozen Gold is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday to Saturday. Expected to open in mid-to-late August.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, all four concepts are taking a science-based approach to exceeding restaurant safety recommendations established by the CDC, state and local authorities. Precautions include wellness checks of each staff member before each shift, enhanced disinfection and hygiene procedures and no-contact pick-up options.
