Johnson County Courthouse wins top honors at DBIA-MAR Awards

DBIA Mid-America Region (DBIA-MAR) conferred its annual awards at a luncheon on November 19 at Boulevard Brewing Company

Eric Danielson, director of business development at CRB and the public address announcer at Allen Fieldhouse, announced the awards.

The Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe, Kansas took top honors as the 2021 Design-Build Project of the Year.  The project also received an Honor Award in the institutional category.  The seven-story, 356,821-SF project features 28 courtrooms and a secure below-grade parking garage.

Other 2021 Honor Award winners:

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs - Lenexa VA Clinic in Lenexa, Kansas (healthcare category).  The design-build team began its collaboration to resolve potential issues before the project was awarded.

Brooklyn Opera House Renovation in Brooklyn, Iowa (commercial category).  This two-story theater, built in 1911, has a connector building that joins the Opera House to the Michael J. Manatt Community Center.

Chetolah Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility Design-Build Improvements in Hays, Kansas (civil category).  This project provides additional water reuse capacity and irrigation for local golf courses, sports complex and other commercial uses.

2021 Merit Award winners:

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Gateway Medical Office Building in Merriam, Kansas (healthcare category).  AdventHealth consolidated some inefficient, undersized, outdated facilities located on its campus into this three story medical office building.

Owner:  MedDevelopment

Merriam Community Center in Merriam, Kansas (institutional category).  This 66,000 SF community center was the first design-build project ever undertaken by the City of Merriam.

Wichita Riverfront Stadium, Wichita Wind Surge in Wichita, Kansas (commercial category).  This project, which has 6,000 seats and capacity for 10,000 fans, was designed and built within 15 months.

Designer:  Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture (SJCF) and DLR Group

Owner:  City of Wichita, Kansas

Stratmann Pump Station in St. Louis, Missouri (civil category).  This pump station, one of the most critical in the Missouri American Water Company service system, serves more than 300,000 customers and contains two 11.5 million gallon storage tanks.

2021 Special Award winners:

United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Cadet Chapel Repairs - Temporary Building Enclosure, USAFA in Colorado Springs, Colorado (Innovation Award).  This project features a temporary enclosure called “The Cocoon” to withstand the harsh weather conditions and promote worker safety.

Owner:  772nd Enterprise Sourcing Squadron

St. James Catholic Church in Liberty, Missouri (Vertical Design Excellence Award).  This new 39,000 SF, $12 million facility is just the third church in the parish’s 183 year history.

Owner:  Catholic Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph and St. James Parish

Jefferson City WTP – Clearwell & High Service PS in Jefferson City, Missouri (Horizontal Design Excellence Award).  Jefferson City’s water treatment plant, originally constructed in 1888 and last modified in 1927, is the first drinking water design-build project in Missouri to use the state revolving fund.  The project was completed $2 million under budget.

Jesse Dull, senior estimator at McCownGordon Construction and DBIA-MAR regional president and board chairman, recognized Mark Deaton, FDBIA, RA, LEED AP, director of operations - architecture, at HNTB Corporation, as the 2021 Leadership Award winner.

The awards ceremony concluded with Mark Tower, vice president, business development at Citidel Electric Group, Inc., and DBIA-MAR president-elect, awarding Dull with a golden gavel in honor of Dull’s leadership.
